He/she must be able to build and maintain cooperative relationships with a wide range of government and private sector agencies, as well as within the County and Medical Services Division. The next MSA will balance political, operational and management considerations in his/her decision-making processes. The ability to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect while promoting critical thinking and non-traditional approaches will be expected of the MSA.

Preferred requirements for the MSA position include a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management or related fields and a minimum of five years’ experience in an EMS system that provides ALS services, with at least two years at a senior level management position. Jackson County Fire District No. 3 in Southern Oregon is currently recruiting qualified applicants to fill the Fire Chief’s position. The current Fire Chief is retiring. This position reports directly to the elected District Board of Directors.

Jackson County Fire District No. 3 is located just north of Medford, Oregon in the heart of the beautiful Rogue Valley. This high progressive CFAI Accredited district serves an area of 167 square miles from seven stations with a budget of approximately $10.5 million. The District has 57 employees and 60 volunteer firefighters who provide fire, EMS, and rescue services to District residents and visitors. The District responded to 4458 alarms in 2004.

Qualifications for the successful applicant include:

  • A Bachelors degree in fire administration or public administration or closely related field or
  • Successful combination of education, training and experience that clearly demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible, full-time, paid experience in a career or combination career/volunteer fire department, at least five (5) of which are in a command, management or supervisory level position – battalion chief or higher
  • Successful completion of or currently enrolled in upper-level management or graduate-level courses, such as the National Fire Academy Executive Officer program, Oregon Fire Service Administrator’s Institute, or CFAI Chief Fire Officer Designation preferred
  • Experience in working with a unionized and volunteer workforce preferred
  • Experience in the management and delivery of training and EMS programs preferred
  • Experience in interagency coordination with wildland protection agencies preferred
  • Experience in a similar organization, district experience preferred
  • Must hold, or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon driver's license
  • Must pass the district's medical requirements and a thorough background investigation; non-smoker preferred

The Board of Fire & Police Commissioners of the City of Effingham, Illinois will hold entry level fire fighter testing beginning with a mandatory orientation on January 13, 2006 followed by the written examination on January 14. This process will establish an eligibility list for the position of FIREFIGHTER for the City of Effingham Fire Department. Only the top 50 candidates achieving the minimum passing grade of 75% will be allowed to continue in the process by taking part in the physical ability test to be conducted on January 28, 2006. The top 25 candidates passing the physical test will then take part in the oral interviews scheduled for February 4, 2006.

Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 21 and not over 35 years of age, posses a valid driver’s license, and high school diploma or GED. All applications must include a copy of the applicants valid Driver’s License, Military Service Record, Military Discharge Papers, Social Security Card, High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate, and College or University Diploma.

The orientation and written examination will be held at the Effingham High School Cafetorium, 1301 W. Grove Avenue, Effingham, Illinois 62401. Orientation is mandatory and will take place on January 13th. Doors for the orientation will open at 6:00 p.m. and the program begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Anyone arriving after that time will not be admitted. Details relating to the testing process will be discussed at the orientation. The written test will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. January 14th at the EHS Cafetorium. PURPOSE

An eligibility register is being established for the position of Firefighter. The list will be used to fill vacancies occurring until approximately one year from the date the list is established, or until the Board of Fire Commissioners extends the list or calls for a new exam.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Firefighters provide emergency assistance and protective services to the public. They protect life and property threatened by fires, explosions, hazardous materials, illnesses, accidents and other disasters. Responsibilities include emergency responses, fireground operations, fire prevention duties, training, instructing others, operating apparatus, report writing, and maintenance of apparatus, equipment, fire stations and grounds. Firefighters work 24- hour shifts or 8-hour days, as assigned, and may be exposed to hazardous conditions, extreme heat, poisonous gases, communicable diseases and other risks of personal injury.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions of the job include those found in the Clark County Fire District 3 job description for Firefighter and as identified in NFPA 1001, the Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. Copies of both are available upon request.

HIRING PROCEDURE

When a vacancy for Firefighter occurs, the top five (5) individuals on the Eligibility List are reviewed by Fire District administrative staff. Should the Fire District administrative staff determine a need to review additional individuals on the eligibility list, this may occur before a selection is made.

The finalist will be required to undergo an additional series of evaluations, which include a physical ability test; final interview; job related medical exam, reference check, driving record check, background investigation for criminal convictions, a substance abuse exam and psychological evaluation. Failure to pass any of the evaluations will result in removal from the register.
